SMR Newsletter: Autumn 09
SMR has been used for the past year with great success on the Isle of Wight. Here, the use of SMR has generally been focused on earthworks applications in the Civil Engineering industry. This has enabled thousands of tonnes of waste material to be diverted from landfill and reprocessed back into recycled backfill materials that outperform their traditional quarried counterparts. Appendix 9 Trial (Hand Mixed only) Report on Alternative Reinstatement Materials
South Yorkshire Laboratory carried out trials and an extensive testing schedule for Sheffield City Council; this was to assess the sustainability of SMR reinstatement materials. The trials covered a 3-4 year period and covered the following tests:-

  • Cube testing
  • Laboratory CBR's (soaking/unsoaked)
  • Insitu CBR's

SMR to provide on site Prima Testing
SMR
have invested in a Prima 100 Lightweight deflectometer to offer an on-site testing service on customer SMR reinstatements. Newly promoted Technical Director, Seb Love, recently attended a course at Loughborough University in the use and theory behind the Prima 100 instrument to ensure that SMR can provide fully qualified trained personnel, with experience of both the product being tested and the instrument testing the product. This depth of knowledge is unique to SMR and as part of a quality control system, can help customers quickly identify and react to any issues in the use of SMR, saving thousands of pounds in potential defect costs due to poor compaction. SMR Newsletter: Spring 09
SMR has an ever increasing number of recycling facilities nation wide (see map on page 4). By using SMR in the recycling process it is possible to accomplish 100% diversion from landfill and produce superior performing backfill products. SMR Premixd facilities are set up in logistically desirable locations to service the local market. The facilities take in their customers waste and reprocess it into a number of backfill products.

This creates a ‘One-Stop-Shop’ for the customer, a system whereby the customer can tip waste and pick up end product from the same location, therefore eliminating transport movements. SMR Ltd has a network of third party suppliers who carry out this service
nationwide and recently SMR Ltd has formed its sister company ‘Sustainable Aggregates Ltd’, which carries out the SMR recycling solution itself. Click here to find out more (3.4mb PDF)

Sustainable Aggregates: Bristol
The first site we look at in our Changing face of aggregates focus is a good example of one of the many smaller sites now starting up around the UK to feed the growing demand for more sustainable aggregates. The new Bristol-based company has taken its name from the sought after virgin material replacement. The Sustainable Aggregates operation is the smaller tonnage end of the supply business and it is seeking to exploit the growing pressure on roadworks and utilities firms to ensure the products they use are as green as possible. A27 Bridge Road, Sarisbury Green, Gas Pipeline. Long term monitoring and testing of SMR treated trench arisings - Apr 08
Scott Wilson Ltd (SW) were commissioned by Sustainable Aggregates Ltd to undertake in situ performance testing of the gas pipeline trench reinstatement on the A27, Bridge Road, Sarisbury Green. The SW testing regime was specifically targeted at establishing the performance of the SMR treated trench arisings, utilised as a Non Flowable Structural Reinstatement Material (NFSMR). NFSMR are classified as an Alternative Reinstatement Material (ARM) within the Specification for Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (2002). General observations on the condition of the trench reinstatement are included for completeness.Click to read more (470Kb PDF)

HAUC The Use of Alternative Materials - Dec 07
Since the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways was published in 2002, the demand for recycled materials had increased due to the European Waste Directive, increases in Landfill Tax and Aggregate Tax and Utility companies’ environmental policies.

Utilities are currently being offered various types of recycled products. At various locations in the UK, Appendix A9 trials of Alternative Reinstatement Materials (ARMs) are successfully being undertaken. Click to read more
